The Dux student for 2020, Mr William van der Spuy is all the way from Kokstad!

William, who was born in Kokstad, calls Kokstad his home as he grew up there and lived there all his life. He started his schooling career at St. Patricks College in Kokstad, after which he went to Merchiston Preparatory School in Pietermaritzburg for 18 months. For his high school career, he was fortunate enough to be able to go to Hilton College in the KZN Midlands.

“Throughout my childhood I have always been involved in agriculture especially as my father is a full time farmer in this area. I have worked and been interested in farming since a young age and started to work more seriously from about 16 years of age. At home we farm mainly with beef cattle, maize, vegetables and sheep. The reason that I chose to study agriculture, which has ever so further developed within me, is that I don't feel there's anything better to be doing than farming, creating good relationships and 'building the land up' to its maximum potential. I find it fascinating how farmers have the ability to take a piece of land and develop it to an extent that the products thereof are of large importance as a worldwide commodity. With the knowledge and practical experience from previous events coupled with that which Grootfontein has taught me, I believe it will take me a long way,” says Willliam van der Spuy.

His mission for 2021 is to go to the USA and work there for possibly a few years before coming back to the farm outside Kokstad.
